The Wood Technology Institute (ITD) is a modern scientific centre which is active in the field of scientific research, innovations and education in close cooperation with the forestry-wood sector sensu lato, especially with the producers of wood, wood materials, wood-based panels and furniture. It is the only scientific and research institution in Poland whose activity encompasses the whole spectrum of issues concerning wood, its processing and applications. Starting from the research on the properties of wood materials and ending with attesting to the quality of wood products and production through issuance of specialist opinions, analyses, expert’s opinions, and certificates.
The Institute, within its structure, has the Testing Laboratory of Wood, Wood-Based Materials, Packaging, Furniture, Constructions and Woodworking Machines and the Certification Centre of Wood Industry Products, both accredited by the Polish Centre for Accreditation (PCA).
The Institute is coordinator of the Polish Technology Platform for the Forestry and Wood Sector, which strives for sustainable use of renewable raw wood material. Wood in various forms may create many new markets, remaining in a close relationship with ecology, economy and environmental protection, and simultaneously using modern technique and technology.
The Wood Technology Institute has the status of Notified Unit no. 1583 in the scope of tasks described in the Regulation (EU) no. 305/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 9 March 2011 laying down harmonised conditions for the marketing of construction products and repealing Council Directive 89/106/EEC and in the Directive 2006/42/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 May 2006 on machinery, and amending Directive 95/16/EC.
As a Third Party Certifier in the field of formaldehyde release in the production of composite wood materials (TPC-19, the status conferred by the California Air Resources Board – CARB), the Institute is authorised to supervise the producers of composite wood materials and carry out formaldehyde release tests in accordance with the California Code of Regulations according to ASTM E1333 and D6007 standards.
In 2014, the Institute was conferred the status of a Technical Assessment Body (TAB) authorised to issue European Technical Assessments.
Since 2011, the Institute acts in line with a Quality Management System acc. to. ISO 9001:2008 in the field of scientific research, R&D, research services, expert’s opinions, opinions, consultancy and training concerning wood processing and wood composites.
Numerous contacts with international organisations and scientific institutions from the wood sector established the Institute’s position as a credible and reliable partner. The Institute cooperates with many companies from the wood sector and economic organisations in Poland and abroad, as well as state administration units and industry self-government. The strategic aim of the Institute is its further development as a modern European research centre, which has a positive influence on the development of the wood industry and the competitiveness of Polish forestry-wood sector.
